This is what you call "a moment".....Bobby Regester in the 2011 Pikes Peak Int'l Hill Climb. Thankfully, he was not injured. Bobby retired from racing after this.

later at bar:

I have two reactions.
1) I'm thankful that we can have a race like this despite the danger. Kind of like the Isle of Mann TT.
2) I also can't help wonder why anyone let's this patch of road exist in a race. Take that corner too aggressive and you're dead. Do not pass Go. Do not collect $200. I'm not sure it's any different than lining a course with clearly marked land mines.

That type of crash is nightmare-fuel. Disoriented by the crash only to find water flooding the cabin... *shivers*

At least he stuck the landing.
![]() 01/21/2014 at 10:46 |

If I remember correctly, the accelerator got stuck so it wasn't like all of a sudden he went all retard and slammed on brakes to hit a wall. I hope.

maybe you'll die maybe you'll have a kickass video and stories for the grandkids about how you went ass over teakettle down a ravine in a racingcar
![]() 01/21/2014 at 10:53 |
|
You wouldnt necessarily die. Look at any of the pikes peak crashes that have happened in the past couple years. The cars are built to keep people alive, and generally do a damn good job at it. He probably wouldve just gone for a hell of a ride.
![]() 01/21/2014 at 10:55 |

I had to watch that 6 times to get it. +1 for you, -7 for me on intellectual deceleration.

The heavens themselves were impressed by this driving.
![]() 01/21/2014 at 11:00 |

So I said "Here ya go, Ditch, have some gravel. Ditches love gravel."

That is straight out of a horror movie. I can't imagine not dying in that situation. I think I would just freeze.

Not his first time in the WRC. He ran a WRC car at Monte Last year as well. He's also competed in the JWRC in 2007 and in the IRC since 2008.

![]() 01/21/2014 at 11:47 |

I'll never understand anyone that has an accident because the accelerator stuck. If it's a stick then it has a clutch, push it. If it's an auto then you can put it in neutral. Both types have an ignition switch, you can turn them off.

Why is it Rallye and not Rally? Reminds me of Gotye.

Because that's how the French spell rally and (most of) the rally takes place in France.
![]() 01/21/2014 at 12:07 |

Fair enough, but what if there is not enough time to do all that? Or any of that, and even if you do would it help in a situation like this. In the video it sounds like he did kill the engine before the impact but it might be sounds got mixed up with the background noise. In the end, drivers often say the darnest things! ;)

I'd assume the notes did say something like "keep in exit" or "keep neat" (because goddamn cliff). But generally you never mention things the driver needs to avoid in the pace notes, otherwise you run the risk of target fixation: Co-driver says "R4 KEEP IN TREE OUTSIDE" > driver looks for tree > driver sees tree > driver runs into tree because he's staring at the tree, not the road.
![]() 01/21/2014 at 14:36 |
|
Lifting off the throttle causes a shift in the weight of the vehicle, one that can potentially cause the driver to lose control. Also, if you are sideways headed for a cliff, you have a lot better chance of saving it if the tires are actively applying a force away from that edge rather than passively skidding towards it. No, it's not Mario Kart.
![]() 01/21/2014 at 14:39 |
|
Naw. The car just REALLY wanted to get washed and as fast as possible.
![]() 01/21/2014 at 14:44 |
|
Yes I'm aware that shifts in weight occurs and that keeping his foot down will make the wheels shoot him away from the ledge faster. But I imagine if there was a bit of a lift before entering the corner before reapplying the gas, perhaps he wouldn't have been so close to killing himself.
![]() 01/21/2014 at 15:11 |
|
That is probably true.
![]() 01/21/2014 at 15:52 |

Lol, I'm well aware of that. It was just a joke, haha.

![]() 01/22/2014 at 11:44 |

If there's no time to hit the clutch or put an auto in neutral then there probably isn't time to hit the brakes either, and that means it wasn't the accelerator being stuck that caused the crash, it was you driving too fast that caused it. :)
The Porsche in that video was obviously coming in waaaay too hot, and the driver apparently forgot that no ABS means no turning if you stand on the brakes.
It should be noted, however, that none of my above comments should be taken as me saying that I could have avoided that crash were I the one driving the Porsche. Having not been in that driver's seat at the time there's no way to really say.
EDIT:
Upon closer review of the video, it doesn't look like he even turned the steering wheel. Deer in the headlights panic maybe? I dunno.
The thing that gets me the most in that video though? Right after the crash the guy closest to the camera goes back to looking at his cell phone. That's not the man I want standing nearby if I ever crash.
![]() 01/22/2014 at 12:01 |
|
Yeah, that phone guy ruffled everyone's fur, unless, you know, this was the 43rd car that crash in the same way on the same corner that day.
As for the incident itself, you wrote what I had/have in mind, so I can just say ditto.
![]() 01/23/2014 at 06:13 |
|
I don't think I'd have the guts to stand where the camera operator was standing. Geez.
![]() 01/23/2014 at 14:53 |
|
This.
In the world of premade stage notes we call the US, I usually take a moment to slap my codriver if they miss changing "tree outside" or "drop outside" or "exposure left" to "keep neat"
I have a handful of other small changes I generally make across the board (1+ and smaller is just hair pin, 6+ turns to "flat" caution, double caution, danger (cause I'm weird like that)), but leaving those things in is a great way to throw off your concentration.
![]() 01/23/2014 at 15:00 |
|
I usually don't say "exposure" either, just "keep neat" or "keep in." Don't want my driver checking out the view like Buffum. Changing a 6+ to "flat" depends on road conditions and what comes next. If it's a R6+ 50 L3 I'm definitely not calling it flat and might even downgrade it to a 6 or 5+. !, !!, and !!! are care, caution, danger.
![]() 01/23/2014 at 15:12 |
|
Fair point on the what follows- that is of course a consideration to make (I'm just generalising, however).
Typically in a R6+ 50 L3 I would rather hear that as "into" but that depends on what lies before. Something like R2+<6+ would obviously make that 50 a little more significant, especially if it was /Cr 50 L3.
Bottom line is know your driver and always always always get rid of the calls mentioning specific hazards. I think the only one I've ever had my codriver leave in was "FF R2+ water !NC rock in apex" which was a big enough deal to be outlined in the stage description, on the official notice board, and during the drivers meeting.
When we finally got to take a look at it we knew why- big ass partially buried rock right on the apex, submerged by a water crossing. woo.
